Kubota L3300 GST FWD problem

I have a L3300. I replaced the engine.
When i re-assembled, the Front wheel drive(FWD) did not work.
I believe the coupler that is located inside the trans came disconnected and possibly fell off inside the tranny. Is there any tricks to re-installing the coupler without doing a major split job? Also, would it be possible and how dificult would it be to go through the side plate where all the GST componets are located?
The service book makes it look like removing the plate is easy, where as the kubota dealer said it may be a mess.
